AND’s Values and Corporate Social Responsibility

AND Digital has grown at a remarkable rate since we opened our doors in 2014. And, as we’ve grown, so has our potential impact on the the communities around us - whether that’s in the cities where we base our Clubs, or in the charitable causes we support.

In recognition of this and to acknowledge our role as part of a wider community, we run a series of giving back initiatives throughout the year - designed to both reduce the impact AND has on the environment, and to offer something back to each of our Club’s local communities.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

At AND we’re working towards building a better company, a more inclusive and impactful tech industry, and communities where people can thrive. Our CSR is split into 4 main components that work together to make a remarkable impact.

  1. Our Workplace Responsibility - From mental health first aid training, quarterly “ask us anything” sessions with the senior leadership team, to regular training and volunteering days we make sure our diverse range of ANDis are supported in their professional and personal capacities. We also take great care in building a supportive network of diversity and inclusion champions (women in tech, LGBTQ+) to make sure each and every ANDi is supported and given equal opportunities.

  2. Our Wellness Programme - We fully support the mental, physical, and emotional wellness of ANDis. We provide access to Private Medical Insurance, an Employee Assistance Programme, gym memberships, mindfulness sessions, and wellness reps for those working client-side.

  3. Our Community Responsibility - We take practical steps to support and improve the communities in which we work, particularly as we recover from the impact of Covid. Each ANDi is given volunteering days to do vital work with charities and other organisations that make a positive social impact.

  4. Our Environmental Responsibility - We aim to be carbon neutral through offsetting by 2023 and through insetting by 2025, Our initiatives include a responsible recycling policy, and a cycle scheme to encourage staff to cycle to work. We are also combatting techno waste by encouraging our people to recycle old tech before buying new devices.

SEI committee keeps AND accountable for progress and delivery

We have an SEI committee (social, ethics and inclusion) at Board Level that is made up of ANDis who want to champion Diversity & Inclusion, Social Impact, and Ethics within AND. The committee is committed to making AND a great place to work.

The committee’s goal is to ensure AND is operating according to its values and business principles, and is supporting its diverse staff in the best possible way. Together, they develop and review the Social impact, Ethical business, Diversity and Inclusion vision and oversee the company’s commitment to it and progress on its delivery.

AND's Ethos

Every ANDi is special; each ANDi is part of a close-knit team that helps guide, build, and equip our client partners with the digital products and capabilities they need to succeed.

This is why we have our own special ways of including each and every ANDi in the development and growth of AND to say thanks for all their hard work and dedication to our overall mission: to make a remarkable impact - globally.

Everyone within AND has a “seat at the table”. Our Iconic Red Chair photos represents this ethos and our embedded psychological safety ensuring meaningful input at every level. That's not all. It's also a prop to showcase our "AND titles" - the unique job title addition that celebrates our hobbies and interests. Look out for chairs masquerading as racing cars, DJ decks and mountain bikes!

We make sure that ANDi’s not only feel like they get a seat at the table but that they actually get it:

  • Owned by ANDi’s - We build shares into every ANDI’s contract. Each year a trading window opens and everyone is given the opportunity to buy more or sell their shares.
  • ANDi representative on the non-executive Board - every year every member of staff has the opportunity to apply to be part of the non-executive board of directors for a whole 12 months with the role of being an ANDi representative.
Simba Sagwete

Simba Sagwete - Squad Lead and Board of Directors ANDi Representative 2020/2021

Being the Andi representative has been an incredible experience and it's almost a shame only one person gets to do it but what a privilege. The learning curve has been steep since day one when I Googled "what does a board do?" And despite being in my 6th year at AND, there are countless things I've learnt about how the business is run.  Getting to meet the impressive group that is our Executive directors was probably what I'll look back on with the most fondness. Alongside having a say in decisions that impact all ~1,000 ANDi's while seeing strategy come to life. I can't imagine any other way I would have had this opportunity at this stage in my career and though I'm sad my stint's come to an end, I'm excited for whoever gets to do it next.”

ANDi wellness and inclusivity in the age of remote working

AND has moved to “Blended Working”, giving ANDi’s the autonomy to choose where they work (home or club-house) that suits their needs. Covid taught us that distributed teams can work to deliver successful client products, but we want to ensure that all ANDi’s that choose remote working are fully supported and included in all social activities too.

We have dedicated communities set up to provide additional support and increase awareness across AND for:

  • Women in tech
  • BAME (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic)
  • LGBTQ+
  • Working Parents
  • Distinguishing Differences (neurodiversity and disability)

We also have multiple groups and communities in Slack set up by ANDi’s to discuss their hobbies and activities - making sure our people have a good balance of productive work and time to socialise during the working day. Some of our groups include:

  • #and-pets
  • #and-plants
  • #and-cars
  • #and-gaming
  • #and-football

Contributing to the community

Our people are passionate about giving back to their local communities, so we enable this through paid days off to fundraise and volunteer. Some key areas we focus on are:

STEM activity

As part of our mission to close the digital skills gap, a key focus for AND is on supporting uptake in STEM subjects. We work with schools throughout the year to deliver everything from workshops and 1:1 career coaching to speed chat sessions and work experience opportunities.

AND She Can

A group of passionate volunteers came together in 2018 to build on top of AND’s existing STEM initiative by running impactful events that showcase deeper insights and knowledge of a career in tech. AND She Can inspires girls and women to consider a career in technology, by providing real insights into tech careers, guidance and inspiration from women role models. This complements the work we do with Code First Girls.

Providing services to charities

When our ANDis aren’t working with a client, we look for opportunities to partner them with local charities. We’ve built new websites, provided upskilling and helped to define new digital product roadmaps for a variety of good causes.

Organising and taking part in fundraising activity

We’re an avid bunch of fundraisers at AND, so there’s always some kind of charitable activity going on - whether it’s our own Tour-de-AND (an annual cycling event that sees ANDis ride from Club to Club) or a team of ANDis sleeping rough to raise funds for homelessness charities.

Our partners

We're proud to work with and support a range of partners, from charities to social enterprises, focused on specific communities.

  • Code Your Future
We offer roles to refugees and provide the training and support they need to succeed as a developer.

  • Age UK
We run ‘tea and tech’ sessions with senior guests to share how technology can help in their daily lives.

  • Mind
ANDis can complete training with Mind and act as mental health champions across AND.

  • The Men’s Room
We worked with charity, The Men’s Room to build them a new website and upskill their team, enabling them to maintain the site moving forward.

  • Byte Night
Our ANDis regularly take part in Byte Night’s fundraising initiative, where people sleep rough to raise both money and awareness for homeless people.

  • Code First Girls
ANDis across the country deliver free courses in coding to women, in partnership with Code First Girls, teaching them the fundamentals of modern web development.

Improving the environment

As a growing tech company, our environmental priorities are focused on using ethical suppliers, reducing tech waste and adopting sensible practices. So we:

  • Buy from suppliers who are committed to responsibly sourcing raw materials, and reducing and disposing of waste as sustainably as possible.

  • Encourage a reuse and recycle policy when tech equipment is no longer usable.

  • Offer a cycle-to-work scheme to encourage sustainable ways of travel.

  • Set up virtual meetings when Clubs need to collaborate, decreasing business travel.
