The case for AI-augmented software delivery
A companion paper to AI’s Next Frontier, The Trust Imperative, The Build Layer and The Operating Layer.
Consider an organisation in which several teams are building agents over the same internal documents. Each team creates its own retrieval pipeline, applies its own access rules and decides how to check the information returned. When a permission changes or a source becomes unreliable, there are several places to investigate and no shared service through which the problem is resolved.
Adding a more capable model does not change this. Fragmented access, inconsistent context and unclear ownership are platform responsibilities, and their consequences grow as agents take on more work.
This paper sets out what the platform layer must provide. Each agent needs an identifiable presence and a named accountable owner. Controls must operate while the agent works, not only when its environment is provisioned. Retrieval must preserve the permissions attached to source data. Costs must be attributable to outcomes. Failures need a defined response, and human handover must preserve the state of the work.
